Mental Health & Policy in the Digital Age

Big Ideas, Real Impact.

The YIM Macro Research Fellowship is an academic year-long program from Fall 2026–Spring 2027, designed for social science students who are ready to move beyond the classroom and into real policy work.

Fellows will work together focusing on a policy issue connected to these research tracks:

  • AI & Mental Health Access: Ethical use of AI chatbots for low-income alternatives to mental health assistance, ethical use of AI usage in the mental health field
  • Digital Surveillance: Protecting client data privacy
  • The Digital Divide: AI-augmented Telehealth

Fellows develop and produce an original policy brief, receive monthly mentorship from a professional, and have a chance to present their research at the end of the semester in Washington, DC.

Fellows produce real research on real systemic issues affecting real communities, and walk away with a tangible work product, a mentor relationship, and a network that extends beyond their university.

Who Should Apply

  • Students in social work, psychology, public health, public policy, and related fields (Undergraduate/Graduate level). Recent graduates are welcome.
  • Strong interest in policy and technology advancement in the mental health field
  • Efficient writing skills

The fellowship is open to U.S.-based undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates. We are specifically looking for individuals in Social Work, Psychology, Public Policy, Public Health, and related fields. We generally define “youth” as individuals under the age of 30.

While there is no monthly stipend, the program provides mentorship, professional networking, and a fully-funded trip including travel and lodging for the Washington, D.C. presentation.

Yes, it is often possible, but it depends on your specific school’s requirements. To receive academic credit, you must connect the fellowship experience to your formal education, typically by registering for an independent study, internship course, or thesis credit through your home institution. We are happy to provide the necessary documentation once your institution approves the arrangement. We recommend reaching out to your academic advisor as early as possible.

No. We are looking for researchers and advocates who are passionate about the impact of technology on mental health, not computer scientists. We provide the research framework and mentorship to help you understand these tools.

No. While we look for a strong interest in the intersection of tech and mental health, you will work with your mentor during the first few weeks to narrow down and finalize your specific research question.

Fellows are expected to dedicate up to 5 hours per week to research, meetings, and cohort activities. The program runs from Fall 2026 through Spring 2027.

While the primary research and mentorship are conducted remotely, there is a featured opportunity for fellows to present their work in Washington, D.C.

Yes. Applications from current members are reviewed on an accelerated timeline. Members also gain exclusive access to a Resume Review Workshop on April 18th where you can have your application materials reviewed individually by our team.
